Kansas ProStart Invitational

Feeding Dreams...Building Futures

The Kansas ProStart Invitational

The Kansas ProStart Invitational® is a premier high school competition focused on restaurant management and culinary arts. Annually, 100 student competitors put their skills to the test in front of industry leaders, school leaders, friends, and family.  All with the hopes of earning scholarships and placing first so they can advance on to represent Team Kansas at the National ProStart Invitational.

How the Competition Works

Each state holds a competition to determine which teams will advance to represent their state at the National ProStart Invitational.  Fore each competition, students must impress judges from leading industry corporations and colleges with the skills they've developed through ProStart.  In Kansas the top team in both the management and culinary events will advance to the National ProStart Invitational.

Three Challenging Competitions

The Kansas ProStart Invitational is composed of three distinct competitions- management, edible centerpiece and culinary - that showcase the most important skills needed in the restaurant industry.

Management teams develop a proposal for the next promising restaurant concept and present it to a panel of industry judges. Next, their problem solving skills are tested as they quickly solve challenges faced by managers daily.

The culinary competition highlights each team’s creative abilities through the preparation of a three-course meal in 60 minutes, using only two butane burners, and without access to running water or electricity. There is no room for error as they are evaluated on taste, skill, teamwork, safety and sanitation.

Edible Centerpiece

Students will demonstrate their creative ability by carving fruits and vegetables to make an edible display.

Competition Rewards

The top four teams from the culinary and management competitions receive individual medals.  The top 3 teams will receive a team trophy.  In the edible centerpiece event, the top 4 students will receive a medal.

Some post-secondary schools will also be offering educational scholarships to help further their careers in the restaurant and foodservice industry. In 2014, Kansas students were presented with $1,008,000 in scholarships opportunities from leading academic institutions.

In addition, all competitors are encouraged to take full advantage of competing at the National ProStart Invitational by networking with other students and industry professionals in attendance.
